To impart practical training in all musical forms to the students - especially from the rural areas - by creating Music Research Schools, leveraging popular learning tools and methods, all aimed towards preserving the classical tamil heritage.

To be a world class institution in all forms of music, specially focused on tamil heritage music on folk art forms as a mission to reach out to all the villages around Tamil Nadu by 2022 through highly qualified teachers and a modern pedagogy.

• Tanjore District is called the granary of South India for its humongous agricultural produce. It can also be called as the ‘Carnatic nerve centre of the whole world’ as it has in  Thiruvaiyaru, the hot seat of carnatic music. This sleepy village boasts of Saint Thyagaraja’s splendid presence here till his end, composing innumerable kritis those that transformed carnatic music globally. This village becomes the center of attraction internationally during the Thyagaraja Aradhana in the month of January every year.
• Thiruvaiyaru can boast of one more feather in its over crowded crown. The presence of Government Music College, the only institution in Tamil Nadu to have Diploma Courses, UG, PG and also Ph.D in Music.
• Established in 1965 as a part of Raja’s College under Madras University. It was then affiliated to Bharathidasan University from 1983. Since 1997 this institution has been functioning under the Art and Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu as Tamil Nadu Government Music College. It is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. J.Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University in the year 2014. Over the past five decades, it has the privilege of having numerous students in the field of music.
• In 2009, the college functions in its own sprawling premises of 11 acres. It has a girls’ hostel with  50 students. It also has a boys’ hostel  with the capacity of 100 students. These hostels were sanctioned by Government of  Tamil Nadu and run by BC – MBC Welfare Department.
• The placement record of this institution is exemplary. The college is having fullfledged placement cell that helps in finding the right opportunities for the students.
• The college is functioning with Anti-ragging cell.
• A strong Alumini Association  that consists of many musical stalwarts helps the students in practical learning and also supporting time to time for the infrastructure.
• The unique 'Earn while you learn' scheme helps the students to apply their learnings practically and also helps them gain confidence, discipline etc.  while performing on stage. It also helps them in earning a decent sum.
• The students of this college are exposed to  various environmental friendly awareness programmes, Green and Clean India, Election and social awareness, Blood donation camps  etc.

All Diploma courses are non - Semester Courses.

UG - PG are Semester courses.
