ABOUT THE INSTITUTION
The Government College of Architecture and Sculpture is a co-educational institution situated on the East Coast Road of Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, India. It offers undergraduate degree courses like, B.Tech in Traditional Architecture, B.F.A in Traditional Sculpture (Stone Sculpture, Sudhai Sculpture, Wood Sculpture and Metal Sculpture) and B.F.A in Traditional Drawing and Painting. This college is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr.J.Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University.
- The Government College of Architecture and Sculpture is located in Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu. It was started in 1957 as the Sculpture Training Centre under the guidance of Department of Industries and Commerce with a sole objective of reviving and extending the frontiers of age-old tradition of Sculpture and Architecture.
- As an initiative effort, it offered a 4 year Proficiency Certificate Course in Architecture and Sculpture. During 1975-76, the Directorate of Technical Education introduced Diploma Courses and renamed the institution as Tamil Nadu Training Centre of Architecture and Sculpture. Later in 1984, a B.Sc. Degree in Sculpture with four electives namely Stone Sculpture, Sudhai Sculpture, Wood Sculpture and Metal Sculpture was started.
- In an attempt to enhance the qualitative output of the institution and to act up to the expectations of the public and to be on par with the standard of All India Council for Technical Education, a 3 year degree course was transformed into 4 year degree – B.Tech. in Traditional Architecture and B.F.A in Traditional Sculpture; in addition to which, a B.F.A in Traditional Drawing and Painting was launched later.
- The institution, once affiliated to the University of Madras, is now affiliated to the newly formed Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University.
- Under the aegis of the Department of Art and Culture, the institution does yeoman service to socially and financially downtrodden people of the society.
- Since its inception over six decades, it is adopted with the technical pace of tradition. The institution assists the students to pursue their goals in a way that its curriculum comprises Shilpa, Agama, Vastu Sastras, Iconometrical and Iconographical sketches of Sculptures, Aesthetics, Philosophy along with Sanskrit, English and Tamil.
- None can match in the virtue of its training with precision and diligence and in the threshold, an ordinary student who pins faith on it, gets moulded as a great artist beyond expectation.
- The institution has the commendable track record of its achievements. Its contributions to the society speak volumes in artistic language. Its laudable works on the record are Valluvar Kottam, Chennai, Poompuhar Art Gallery, Administrative Block and Library building of Tanjore Tamil University, Madurai Muthaiah Mandram, Anna Arch, Chennai, Thoranavayil (Entrance Arch) of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madras University Entrance Arch, Thalaimannar Thiruketheeswaram Temple, Srilanka and etc..

Every student of this college is provided with free art materials worth Rs.2000/- per annum under a special revised sanction of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Every year, this institution organises educational tour by which a pupil gets a rare opportunity to visit historical places of artistic and aesthetic value in Tamil Nadu, South India and North India.
Museum - A Marvel
It is the only institution that maintains an art museum. The old campus of the college is customized as a museum with its chief focus on the showcase of our student's art pieces of dexterity to the public.
