The Hon'ble former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J Jayalalithaa, established the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University on the 14th of November, 2013, exclusively for Music and Fine Arts so as to preserve, foster, popularize and propagate the traditional performing arts, such as Indian Music, Bharathanatyam, Fine Arts and Sculpture.

Hon’ble Minister for Industries,Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, Archeology, is the Pro Chancellor of this University.
Dr. S Sowmya was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr.J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University by the Chancellor, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She is a well known popular Carnatic Vocalist who is a disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr.S.Ramanathan and Sangita Kalacharya Smt.T.Muktha. She has won many awards of which Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu and Sangita Kalanidhi conferred by the Madras Music Academy are noteworthy and prestigious. She holds a Doctorate from the University of Madras in a topic combining Music and Science.
We strive for the development of music and fine arts and for the furtherance of the advancement of learning, along with research, documentation, publishing of audio, video recording and popularizing of all branches of music, fine arts and performing arts in the State of Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University is located at Adyar within the campus of the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, a heritage building known as the Brodie’s Castle, Dr.DGS Dinakaran Salai, Chennai-600028, on the banks of the Adyar River. This University offers Postgraduate and M.Phil courses in Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mridangam, Nagaswaram and Bharathanatyam, apart from M.F.A. in Painting and Visual Communication.
